The Australian has a fun piece on David Tench's first political interview here. Julia Gillard was the lucky victim. Here is a taste of what we have to look forward to when it airs next month:
"A lot of men find beautiful women intimidating, but I find intimidating women beautiful," was how Tench opened the interview with Gillard. "I'm going to put this as delicately as I can: when are you going to knife Kim Beazley?"
..
Gillard either giggled or cringed as the audacious talkshow host dismissed her male colleagues as "ugly men with fat tummies".
Tench wondered whether the main reason Labor MPs refused to move against Beazley was "because if you roll Kim, once he starts rolling he's never going to stop".
Speculating on Labor winning the next election, Tench wondered how Beazley might adapt to living in The Lodge: "The food there is free - is this the Labor Party's plan to help farmers?"
There was a touch of political Zen from Tench - "As a shadow minister, when the sun goes behind the clouds, do you disappear?" - and a disrespectful prediction: "If things go as well as you expect at the next election, Julia, which shadow ministry will you have?"
Gillard hardly got a word in, although she managed a jab at John Howard when Tench speculated about lies in politics and wondered what the Prime Minister might look like "if he was Pinocchio?"
Gillard: "He'd be taller."
Tench: "Yes, and less wooden."
Gillard: "He's a clever politician, that's not necessarily a compliment."
Tench: "Why, are you a dumb one?"
