Here are some of the questions Katie Couric asked John Edwards on 60 Minutes (note this video has audio only):
The blogosphere is debating whether Couric was appropriate or not ... See here.
I tend to agree with these comments posted to the CBSNews.com story:
- "If I had been Mrs. Edwards... I would have came right back at you regarding the death of your husband. You certainly did not stop your career..."
- "Katie Couric was insensitive to the point of being cringe-inducing. In her effort to be hard-hitting, I suppose, she was incredibly rude..."
- "Couric's hypocrisy is amazing. She knows, from personal experience, that there's a therapeutic benefit to continuing to work, continuing one's life. For her to repeatedly hound the Edwardses, suggesting that they don't care sufficiently for their family, was disgusting..."
(Hat tip: TV Newser.)
John Edwards himself, however, seemed to have no problem with the questions:
My reaction was that Katie Couric asked questions that the American people are asking themselves, and I think they were completely legitimate questions. And I think the American people deserve answers from me and from Elizabeth to those questions. I mean, I'm asking America to support me and vote for me as their next president, and I think part of the evaluation of a candidate for president is a personal evaluation of the character and integrity and honesty of a candidate. So, no, I thought the questions were fair. Tough. I thought they were tough, but they were fair.

Update: Read Susan Estrich's superb piece on John and Elizabeth Edwards here:
There's only one reason a man with a wife with incurable breast cancer and two small children at home should be running off to run for president.
Not because he wants the job, or even because she wants it for him.
Because she wants it for them.
